Emeritus Professor Paul Grundy AM was one of the founding partners of AMOG,a Director, and the AMOG Emeritus Professor Paul Grundy Memorial PhD Scholarship at Monash University has been named in his honour. His central interest was the performance of structures in hostile environments under dynamic and repeated loading. His work resulted in research into load spectrums, fatigue and fracture, incremental collapse, risk assessment and life extension applied to cranes, bridges, ships and offshore structures with wrought iron, steel, concrete and composite material. In 2008 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia and in 2012 was awarded the Anton Tedesko Medal from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) for his contributions to the research of the lifetime performance of structures in hostile environments and disaster risk reduction. A valued friend and mentor, Emeritus Prof. Grundy passed away in 2013. Within AMOG, he may be remembered for his work on the Reliability of Bulk Carriers Project, which included instrumenting an actual bulk carrier, extensive numerical modelling, and a vast array of seminars and conferences. Prof. Grundy retired in 2004 following the devastating tsunami, after which he launched the “Joint Working Commission for Disaster Reduction on Coasts."
