Achievements

In 2016, AMOG's Dr Hayden Marcollo and Professor Andrew Potts were awarded the Australian Industrial Research Group (AIRG) Medal for Australasian Technological Innovation, for AMOG Technologies' innovative LGS® technology.

The AIRG Medal (a program that commenced in 2011) is designed to recognise Australasian Leaders, individuals or project teams for the achievement of widely recognised, outstanding industrial research and innovation contributions. A key award criterion of the AIRG Medal is the demonstration of the translation of the research outcome into a successful commercial contribution for the awardee company. It also recognises the important roles that both large and industrial companies and technology-oriented SMEs play in economic growth, from successful technological innovation that has market impact.

AMOG Technologies was awarded a High Commendation, recognising the company's innovative LGS technology.

Longitudinally Grooved Suppression (LGS) technology is a unique patented geometry that is set to revolutionise the offshore drilling industry.

Inspired by a previous study of the saguaro cacti, LGS has been tested by AMOG Technologies Pty Ltd for application to the offshore oil and gas industry's Drilling Riser Buoyancy Modules 9DRBMs). The 2-tiered iterative testing campaign illustrated ~30% reduction un drag forces on drilling risers (with no loss of buoyancy), reduced dynamic fatigue loading, and suppression of vortex-induced vibration (VIV).

LGS has the potential to deliver improved uptime and safety for offshore personnel, and annual savings of up to USD$12M per rig.

Conference: SNAME (Texas Chapter) Conference

In 2015, AMOG was proud to announce that Tim Lee, Vice President of AMOG Consulting, Inc. and presenting author, was awarded best paper at the SNAME Symposium held in Houston, Texas. Co-authored by Robert E. Melchers (University of Newcastle), Iwona B. Beech (University of Oklahoma), Andrew E. Potts and Andrew A. Kilner (AMOG), the paper was entitled, “Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) of Mooring Systems: Diagnostic Techniques to Improve Mooring Integrity*” and presented an overview of the most recent research regarding factors influencing rates of conventional corrosion and MIC (as defined in the SCORCH Joint Industry Project).

AMOG was a joint finalist with State Water Corporation and Geotechnical Engineering in the Sydney Engineering Excellence Award for work on the Burrendong Dam Temperature Control Structure.  The installation of a temperature control structure at Burrendong Dam in Central West NSW is set to benefit communities along the Macquarie River and improve river health by enabling warmer water from the surface of the dam to be released downstream instead of cold water from the bottom of the dam.  AMOG went on to be a joint winner in one of these categories.

AMOG was awarded the Engineers Australia 2011 Award of Excellence, recognising the company's involvement in the West Seno Mooring Refurbishment Project.

When the mooring for Asia’s first deep water hydrocarbon development reached the end of its life, earlier than expected, AMOG stepped in to replace it. In a world first, the mooring of an on-stream production facility in 1000m water depth was redesigned, upgraded and replaced; without interruption to operations. Demonstrating Australian engineers have the smarts to support a major oil company from brainstorming through to offshore trouble shooting, AMOG designed, documented, specified and supervised the successful refurbishment, giving the facilities mooring another 20 years’ operation and adding vital knowledge to the engineering community from a JIP and research activities.

AMOG was presented the award for Business of the Year at the Monash Business Awards held at the Wheelers Hill International on Friday July 29th. Managing Director and company founder Professor Andrew Potts (pictured below accepting the award) said that the company has enjoyed its long affiliation with the City of Monash.

AMOG has been headquartered in Notting Hill, adjacent to Monash University, since 1991 and continues to employ engineers from the local area as well as from around the country and overseas. "My connections to the City of Monash go back a long way," Professor Potts said in a statement, "The Monash University connection made the City of Monash a great place to grow a business like AMOG."

In 1998, Dr Andrew Potts was awarded the INSPEX Innovation in Imaging Award for his work on non-destructive testing of wire strands and ropes using the INSPEX System.

In the early years, one of AMOG's founding projects was work conducted for ESSO Australia, associated with the Pipeline Cost Reduction Study. This involved diverless pipeline and flexible riser installation schemes for marginal fields in Bass Strait.

The work conducted on this project won AMOG an Engineers Australia Award of Excellence in 1995.

In 1993 AMOG was fortunate enough to be part of the APEA Study on the "Environmental Impacts of Offshore Drilling Activities in Australian Waters," and was awarded the Australian Minerals and Energy Environmental Foundation (AMEEF) Award the following year.
