Abstract
Aerial application of dispersants are an effective means of responding to oil spills in coastal waters and the deeper waters of the Outer Continental Shelf or Gulf of Mexico. To ensure the safety of responders and nearby wildlife, a buffer area is put in place around the spilled oil to be treated, within which spraying operations are conducted. In 2015, a research project was initiated to develop a prototype Decision Support Tool (DST) designed specifically for estimating the spray drift during the aerial application of dispersants on an oil spill. In 2019, an initiative was undertaken to further develop the DST and address known data gaps in the modeling used in the prototype, expand on the aircraft included in the tool, and include a contour plot output of dispersant deposition. The DST has been designed specifically for estimating the spray drift during the aerial application of dispersants on an oil spill through the use of complex Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling.
The DST program operational space was developed based on direct input from Oil Spill Response Operators (OSROs) for ten airframes currently used in the United States for aerial response operations, including both turbo propeller and turbo fan engine types. The DST employs a database of results generated using the latest in CFD modeling technology to examine flow structures and drift effects created by various operating conditions, coupled with specific configurations of different oil spill response aircraft and their spray systems (boom and nozzle configurations). The DST uses a Response Surface Curve (RSC) for each airframe to predict the drift extent of dispersant particles and mass deposition concentration, the RSC for each airframe was derived from a database of results generated using the latest CFD modeling technology.
The studies conducted to generate data for the DST RSCs provided considerable insight into the relationships between the particle dispersant behavior for different airframe types. Trends were identified in particle dispersion behavior when airframes were flown with a heavy payload (full weight) compared to lighter payload (empty weight). These trends change depending on the airframe used and, more specifically, the location and arrangement of the boom used to release the droplets relative to the location of the main wing. Change in Particle Size Distribution (PSD) was also investigated for flight operations of one airframe and the impact on the drift extent reported.
The DST will provide oil spill responders with information related to the extent of any areas potentially impacted by dispersant drift. This will assist the operational control personnel in establishing setback distances, information which becomes increasingly important as a spill escalates beyond a Tier 1 response where the size of the spill, and the resources committed, become significant. In addition, the DST generates a contour plot of mass deposition at ground level based on the operational and environmental parameters input to the program, providing the user with a graphical display of where the majority of the aerial dispersant is predicted to land. While the analysis and tool development are complete, a formal peer review has not been completed at the time of the paper publication.

Abstract
Safe and reliable access to offshore energy, whether it be through hydrocarbon or renewable sources, requires offshore infrastructure held on station by well designed, well installed and well monitored mooring systems. The bounds of what is possible with mooring integrity monitoring technology has expanded in recent years, providing stakeholders with a more complete view of risk over the life of the floating facility. As regulatory requirements eventually follow from these innovations, there is also increasing pressure on operators to expand their monitoring capabilities to retain compliance.
This paper presents an overview of some of the insights gained from using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) vessel position data and metocean data for real-time mooring integrity monitoring. The means through which a GNSS-based integrity monitoring system can be programmed to detect mooring failures is presented and compared with alternative monitoring techniques. The potential for such a GNSS-based system to complement or replace other methods such as in-line load cell is discussed, particularly in scenarios where the installation or replacement of such direct mooring line monitoring technologies can be prohibitive from an operational or cost perspective.
The practical considerations gathered from seven combined years of operational mooring integrity on various offshore facilities are also discussed, including the use of metocean monitoring and forecasts, data rate, resolution, accuracy, delay and quality considerations, and the challenges involved in rolling out such a system on an operating facility.
This paper provides operators of floating facilities with insights into the kind of data which should be considered for an effective monitoring solution, as well as an approach to combine different data streams (vessel offsets, first order motions and environmental data) to derive a holistic assessment of mooring integrity. This information can be valuable for operators defining the scope of monitoring for new facilities or looking to get the most value out of the data on their existing facilities, where a system such as the one presented can provide a quantitative basis for operational decisions and improve the regulatory and risk compliance of offshore facilities.

Abstract
Some drilling operators have experienced a loss of pressure from drilling riser auxiliary lines during operations. In some instances the loss of pressure has been as a result of auxiliary line seals experiencing excessive wear at the pin-box connection.
In the case described within this paper, the failure was investigated and attributed to Vortex Induced Vibration of the main drilling riser. The rigid interface between the main riser and the outer auxiliary lines results in transfer of main drilling riser dynamic curvature motions directly into vertical axial motions at the pin-box connection. In the case considered, a high degree of VIV excitation was experienced through the drilling campaign which resulted in excessive wearing and ultimately failure of the pin-box seal.
This paper presents a methodology to compute the auxiliary line axial displacement resulting from the drilling riser displacement and curvature. This methodology provides a means of estimating the relative axial motion of the pin-box connection when the main drilling riser is under VIV lock-in. It will also assist in identifying if excessive seal wear will be a concern during a drilling campaign. In this case it suggested that the limiting condition for the drilling riser was not fatigue of the main drilling riser, but wear of the pin-box seal.
As a consequence of this investigation, it is recommended to include checks for excessive relative axial motion in general analysis methodology for deepwater drilling risers. As with VIV fatigue issues, the issue may be mitigated through VIV suppression.
