AMOG recently surveyed# 31% of the FPSO Fleet (55 vessels) and identified 7 multiple line failure events, 35 single line failure events and 32 pre-emptive replacement events. About 1/3 of events resulted in production shutdown with one shut down incurring costs of over $US1 Billion.

The variations and  inconsistencies in standards, both operational and maintenance, combined with frequently inefficient condition monitoring and limited provisions for risk, has resulted in Mooring failure rates being up to 25 times higher than accepted failure rates.
The probability of FPSO mooring line failure is high:

  • Single Line Failure Probability: 2 x 10-2 (1 in 50 years)
  • Multiple Line Failure Probability: 3 x 10-3 (1 in 350 years) In practical terms, based on the Current FPSO Population, this equates to:
    • Single line failure: 3-4 events per year
    • Multiple line failure: 1 event every 1.5 years*
